Focus Question
How does the point of impact a badminton racquet hits a birdie and the velocity of the swing affect the outcome and type of shot in badminton? Secondarily, does the ethnicity of the player affect the shot and how the shot is made at all? What basic physics concepts are behind the sport of badminton?
Objectives
-determine how a drop shot, smash and clear shots, affect the point of impact and velocity in badminton
-to determine the physics behind the drop shot, smash and clear
-which physics principles and formulas help prove the 'formula' for how to make the shots (aerodynamics)
-determine if ethnicity affects badminton shots (swings, points of impact, etc.)
How will this be accomplished?
-Videos of AC varsity badminton players playing badminton will be recorded. They will hit the drop shot, smash and clear. Afterwards, the videos of the shots will be analyzed in relation to physics [More on this in procedure]
-to analyze point of impact, Dartfish software was used. The angle was measured in relation to a flat racquet.
-to analyze velocity of swing, Logger Pro was used in scaling and plotting points.
-to determine differences between players of different ethnicities, videos of players of a certain nationality will be analyzed and compared to those of other nationalities
